Legal Gambling Age in New Jersey
Anyone under the age of 21 is prohibited from gambling by the Casino Control Act (N.J.S.A. 5:12-119).
Atlantic City casinos must exclude anyone under the legal drinking age, which is 21. The same applies to online casinos.

Here’s a timeline from the 1970s when the first casinos got legalized in the state to the recent years when online betting became a thing in NJ.
1977
In 1976, the residents of Atlantic City voted in favor of casino gambling legalization, aiming to boost the economy. A year later, in 1977, the New Jersey Casino Control Act was passed, allowing casino gambling in Atlantic City. And still, it is the only city in the state where legal casinos can be found.
1978
It took around two years for the first casinos to be built in Atlantic City. On May 28, 1978, the Resorts International Casino, now known as Resort Casino Hotel, opened its doors. Soon after, Caesars and Bally’s were opened as well.
1990
The loudest casino project of the 1980s was the Taj Mahal, owned by former US President Donald Trump. Being the biggest land-based casino in the world at that time, Taj Mahal opened its doors on April 2, 1990, and boasted 120,000 square feet of gaming space. It took 13 years for another casino to unseat the Taj Mahal as the highest-grossing casino establishment.
2006
In 2006, New Jersey paved the way for regulated online gambling by passing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Since then, banks were not allowed to process online gambling transactions. And several years later, New Jersey became one of the first states to legalize online gambling together with Delaware and Nevada.
2013
In February 2013, Bill A2578 was signed by NJ Governor Chris Christie to fully legalize and regulate online gambling in New Jersey. According to the bill, online casino operators could only get a license by partnering with a brick-and-mortar Atlantic City casino. Such a rule stimulated gamblers to visit the land-based venues to get special bonuses and thus worked in favor of the city’s economy. By the end of 2013, the first online casino in NJ started accepting players.
2018
In 2018, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was abolished (not without New Jersey’s help), giving way to sports betting legalization. In June of the same year, Assembly Bill 4111 was signed by Phil Murphy, the Governor. Since then, NJ racetracks and casinos have gotten the right to accept sports bets.
2020
The online gambling industry has been on the rise in recent years. In 2020, NJ gamblers wagered more than $6 billion on sports, outriding Nevada with its 2019’s $5.4 billion record. The reason for such a boost is mainly the legalization of online sports betting.
2021
Just one new addition to the state in 2021, PointsBet launched an NJ online casino alongside its new offering in Michigan, which they established in the same year. Since March 2021, online casinos have produced revenues of over $100 million every month without fail, with December taking in a record-setting $133.2 million.
2022
The record set in the previous December wouldn’t last long, though, with January 2022 seeing numbers in excess of $137 million and another record-breaking December with $151.4 million. In fact, online casinos had a record-breaking year in 2022, with $249.4 million paid in taxes, which totaled about 47% of all gambling tax revenue collected state-wide in the 2022 fiscal year.
2023
2023’s fiscal year, which ran from June 2022 to June 2023, saw online gambling provide the majority share of taxes to the Casino Revenue Fund for the first time, providing approximately $266.7 million, or 53.9%, of a total of $494 million generated. In further news, with the New Jersey online casino law up for extension after its original 10-year period in 2023, legislators finally agreed on a 5-year extension despite significant growth and over $1 billion collected in taxes.
