Online gambling in New Jersey became legal in February 2013, after the state’s Legislature passed Bill A2578 that was later signed by then Governor Chris Christie. This meant that the residents of New Jersey no longer needed to resort to offshore gambling sites, as legal NJ online casinos were on their way.

Sports betting is also legal in New Jersey since the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018, mainly thanks to the efforts of Raymond Lesniak, a former N.J. Senator. Lesniak was the one who introduced legislation aimed at decriminalizing sports betting in the state right after the first attempt to overturn PASPA failed in 2014. According to Lesniak, sports wagering conducted at a racetrack or casino under procedures developed solely by the racetrack or casino shall not be considered unlawful gambling, and a person shall not be subject to criminal or civil liability under the laws of this State for participating in or conducting, sports wagering at a racetrack or a casino. After years of revisions and lawsuits, the ruling was finally made in favor of Lesniak and his legislation in 2018.

What Is New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and How Does It Regulate Online Casinos in NJ?

DGE was formed in 1977 with the goal to oversee gambling activity in the state of New Jersey. After the legalization of online gambling in 2013, DGE was put on the task of issuing gambling licenses to NJ online casinos.

As per Bill A2578 signed by Gov. Chris Christie, online gambling sites in New Jersey can only operate legally if they are partnered with one of the land-based casinos in Atlantic City. Casinos like Golden Nugget, Borgata, Caesars, Hard Rock, Ocean casino, Tropicana, and Resorts are all partnered with one or several legal online casinos in NJ.

In short, DGE’s mission is to assess whether an online casino applying for a license is fit to receive that license and further keep its operations in check. Once the assessment is made, the agency sends its report to the CCC (Casino Control Commission), which then makes the final decision of whether a particular casino receives a license and joins a group of NJ online casinos.

DGE’s overall objective is to maintain a stable and safe NJ online gambling environment. The DGE along with the Regulatory Prosecutions Bureaus ensure the enforcing the laws of the Casino Control Act in several areas of operation, including but not limited to accounting and internal controls, gaming equipment, rules of the games, regulations of the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control, advertising, simulcasting, underage gambling and drinking, exclusion list violations, casino employee noncompliance.

As part of the state-wide responsible gambling agenda, the NJ DGE offers a voluntary NJ self-exclusion program from both land-based and online casino establishments. The program offers three options: a one-year exclusion, five years of exclusion, or a life-time ban. Individuals enrolling into a program can take advantage of free consultations with designated professionals.

A Brief History of NJ Gambling

Even though online casinos have only become a part of New Jersey’s gambling landscape in the last decade, the gambling in NJ dates back to the 1970s. That said, here’s a timeline that includes key years and events that shaped the state’s gambling history:

1977

Casinos were banned in New Jersey until 1976, when the residents of Atlantic City voted in favor of casino gambling in hopes of improving the city’s economy. It was only a year later that the New Jersey Casino Control Act was passed, and the plans for the first casinos to be built in AC were getting drawn. The state’s constitution only allowed casino gambling in Atlantic City, and to this day, legal casinos can’t be found in any other part of the state.

1978

Even though the residents of Atlantic City voted for the legalization of casino gambling in 1976, they had to wait for two more years for casinos to start welcoming their first customers. The first in line was Resorts International Casino (now called Resorts Casino Hotel) that opened its doors on May 28, 1978, on the location of the historic Chalfonte-Haddon Hall hotel. It was followed by Bally’s and Caesars that opened only a year later.

1990

Several more casinos opened in AC through the 1980s, but none of them made as much noise as an ambitious project from businessman and now former US president Donal Trump that was dubbed Trump Taj Mahal. The casino took a couple of years and over one billion dollars to be built before it was finally opened on April 2, 1990. Featuring over 120,000 sq/ft of gaming space, Taj Mahal was arguably the biggest casino establishment in the world at the time. It remained the highest-grossing casino in AC for the next 13 years.

2006

In 2006, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was signed to prevent offshore gambling by prohibiting the banks from processing payments directed to and from offshore gambling websites. This document essentially paved the way for the regulated online gambling industry in New Jersey. Only a few years later, New Jersey became the only state alongside Nevada and Delaware to legalize online gambling.

2013

On February 26, 2013, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed Bill A2578 that officially marked the era of legal online casino gambling in the state. This was actually a new version of the proposed 2011 bill, with the major addition being that online operators will only be issued a license if they partner with one of the land-based casino companies in Atlantic City. The goal of such a rule was to stimulate online gamblers to visit AC casinos by giving them the opportunity to earn special benefits through playing online and to further invigorate the city’s economy. In November that year, the first online casino in New Jersey opened.

2018

New Jersey played a major role in abolishing PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) that served as the main rampant for the legalization of sports betting. With the Act out of the way, Governor Phil Murphy signed Assembly Bill 4111 in June 2018, making New Jersey the first state to legalize sports betting after Nevada. The Bill allowed NJ casinos and racetracks to established retail locations for accepting sports wagers.

2020

The online betting industry in New Jersey has been on an upward path in the last several years. Namely, the last five months of 2020 were all record-setting when it comes to bets wagered on sports. NJ bettors wagered more than $6 billion during 2020, beating the $5.4 billion record set by Nevada the previous year. The major reason for the record-breaking numbers is the addition of online sports betting, as NJ bettors can now place wagers from their homes using computers and mobile devices.

2021

While 2020 was thought to be the best year for NJ online gambling market, 2021 took it to new heights. In 2021, iGaming revenue in the state hit a new record, amounting to $1B, with the largest share of it brought in by Borgata casino. The market continues to expand — 6 new online casinos launched in New Jersey in 2021, including the famous Betway and FanDuel brands.

2022

2022 was rich in good news for NJ online gambling. Evolution Gaming live dealer craps arrived in online casinos, 3 new websites were launched, and total gambling wins increased by 27% when compared with the last year. However, 2022 is also the year when the 10-year online gambling legislation comes to an end, and a new deal is required. Fortunately, on September 15, 2022, the Assembly Tourism, Gaming, and the Arts Committee unanimously voted Yes for the bill A2190, meaning that the expiration date for the authorization to conduct games online is extended to 2033.

How We Rate NJ Gambling Sites

What we do here is select the best NJ online casinos for your attention. But how exactly do we decide which casinos are the best and which factors do we consider when rating a website? Below, you’ll find a list of five criteria used by our team to test and rate each New Jersey online casino. Please note that there is nothing about casino safety in this list, as it’s a self-evident factor. All the casinos on this page are licensed and regulated by the NJ DGE and thus are 100% safe for your bets.

Bonuses & Promos

Many players look for new casinos specifically to catch new bonuses, so this is the first thing we look at. What we check is the wagering requirements (should be reasonable), bonus expiration date (shouldn’t be too brief of a period), the list of eligible games (shouldn’t be too short), and any other things in the bonus T&C that we find interesting.

In every casino review, you’ll find a detailed description of a welcome bonus, other promotions, and sometimes even an exclusive bonus code.

Games Variety

There are two types of gamblers: those who have a couple of favorite lucky games and play them again and again and those who like trying new titles with each gaming session. While it’s not a problem to find a casino if you’re a type 1, you might be struggling if you’re the one looking for variety.

That’s why we always consider the number of games in each category (slots, table games, live dealer games, etc.), software providers present in the casino, how often the game list is updated, and all the other game-related factors.

Customer Support

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an experienced gambler or a beginner, the time might come when you need someone to answer your questions about the casino, whether it’s a registration issue or an issue with a deposit. This is where customer support service comes to the stage.

When rating a casino, we always strive to test customer support and see how responsive it is and which contact methods are available. We also pay attention to the FAQ section, if any. It’s always better when there is a list of popular questions with detailed and informative answers so that you don’t have to wait for the customer support reply about the minimum deposit limit or some other basic info.

Mobile & Apps

It’s easy here. If a casino has a dedicated mobile app both for iOS and Android devices, it’s a great casino. If it doesn’t, it might still be a great one, but it won’t get 10/10 from us.

However, just having an app is not enough. It should be user-friendly and bug-free, have a decent number of games, including live dealer titles, and in a perfect-case scenario — it should have both a casino and a sportsbook combined in one app. We also pay attention to the app rating in App Store and Google Play store and read other players’ reviews.

Banking Options

It doesn’t matter how awesome the game library or the welcome bonus is if you can’t conveniently deposit and withdraw money from a casino.

That’s why the last factor for us to consider is the list of banking options, the speed of transactions, and the limits set by a casino, both for deposits and withdrawals.

Atlantic City Operators-Partners of Legal Online Casinos

There are quite a few great online casinos in New Jersey, which means there are also lots of equally fine offline casinos, as an online casino can only operate in the state by partnering with a brick-and-mortar venue. So here is our list of the best Atlantic City casinos and online gambling websites operating under their licenses.

Online Casino Bonuses at NJ Casino Sites

Once you enter any NJ casino website, you’ll see a bunch of free stuff offered to players — free spins, deposit matches, cashbacks, and so on. It might seem tricky if you are a beginner, but no worries, it’s a legal and regular practice.

Casinos use bonuses to attract new players and to reward the existing ones, there is nothing wrong with that, so claim your bonuses with no hesitation. Just make sure you are aware of the wagering requirements, i.e., the number of times you are required to wager the bonus money until you can withdraw the wins.

Here are the most popular kinds of bonuses in New Jersey online casinos explained.

Welcome Bonuses

There is one bonus you can find in every NJ online casino, and it’s a welcome bonus, or a welcome pack, depending on how generous a casino is.

A welcome bonus is a bonus given to a new player, usually after making the first deposit. In most cases, it’s a deposit match, which means you’ll get as much bonus money as you deposited. Thus, your first deposit of $100 will turn into $200, with some wagering requirements on the bonus part.

In some cases, you can expect to get not just one bonus but a whole bonus pack that consists of a deposit match and some free spins, for instance. Be attentive at this point, as each part of a pack might have its own wagering requirements — make sure to check it out in the bonus T&C.

No Deposit Bonuses

Unfortunately, no deposit bonuses can rarely be found in NJ online casinos. As you could have guessed from its name, such a bonus can be claimed without any previous payments required. So yes, you just sign up at a casino and get some money, usually around $10, credited into your account.

It is a perfect way to look around the casino and decide whether you like it, but note that in most cases, you won’t be able to withdraw the money until you actually make a deposit. Alternatively, the bonus can be withdrawable, but the wagering requirements will be quite high.

Free Spins Bonuses

Free spins are a perfect bonus for the slots fans, as it gives you a chance to spin some reels and get some wins without risking your money. Free spins are usually a part of a welcome pack, which makes them not that free after all, as you can only get them after making a deposit.

When you’re claiming such a bonus, make sure to pay attention, first of all, to the wagering requirements and, secondly, to the list of slots eligible for bonus use. Sometimes, you can use the free spins in any game you like, but in most cases, you’ll be limited to several slot machines or even just one.

Refer-a-Friend Bonuses

This bonus is not for you if you like to keep all the goodies for yourself, but if you’re willing to share your favorite casino with a friend, you might even be rewarded. A refer-a-friend bonus usually works like this:

  1. You copy a referral link from your casino account;
  2. You share this link with a friend;
  3. Once they sign up to a casino and make the first deposit, you will also get a bonus into your casino account.

Thus, you can sometimes get up to $50 for each referral, but note that you’ll only get the bonus money if people who used your link actually make a real money deposit. Besides, the number of referrals is limited to 5-20 people, depending on the casino.

Reload Bonuses

A reload bonus is similar to a deposit match, and it can actually be a deposit match. The difference between this bonus and a welcome one is that a reload bonus is given to you for your second, third, or any next deposit. It can be a 100% match, or you can get 50% or 25% of your deposit, depending on the casino.

A reload bonus is not that common, but it can be rather lucrative, especially if you enjoy the casino and don’t mind sticking to it for several more deposits.

Other Bonuses

Above, we’ve covered the most popular types of casino promotions, however, not every bonus can be fit into one of these boxes. New Jersey online casinos regularly introduce new bonuses, so you can expect weekly promotions like Free Spins Friday, monthly tournaments, birthday presents, no-risk days, cashback bonuses, and so on and so forth.

NJ Online Casino Games

So you created your casino account, claimed all the bonuses, now it’s time to get to the action and play the games. There is no such thing as “the best casino game,” as we’re all different and like different things, but there are several factors you can consider when picking out a game for your bets.

First of all, it’s a provider. If you see a game made by a famous brand like IGT, NetEnt, or Evolution Gaming — chances are high your betting experience will be good.

Secondly, pay attention to the game’s RTP. RTP stands for Return to Player and means the percentage of your bets that will be returned to you in the long run. To cut it short, the higher the RTP, the more chances of winning you have. If you’re interested in finding out which slots have the highest RTP rates, you can take a look at our page about the best high RTP slots. There, you can find a list of the top slots that offer the best chances of winning over the long term.

Now let’s talk about the popular NJ casino games in detail.

Slots

Famous NJ online slots are hands down the most popular games in any online casino in the state. Players love slots for several reasons. First of all, slots are very easy to play. It’s a simple game of chance, so all you need to do is to hit one button and wait for the machine to either bring you the win or not. The second reason is their versatility. There are thousands of different slot options, from simple 3-reel fruit machines that remind you of old-school one-armed bandits to sophisticated video slots packed with bonus features. And, finally, slots can be rather rewarding, as the RTP of some titles reaches 99% and more.

If you don’t know which slot to choose from, try some of our favorite machines:

Blood Suckers by NetEnt

Blood Suckers

Blood Suckers features a 5-reel, 25-payline video slot layout that is easy to play and offers enough winning potential to keep players engaged. The game is adorned with creepy vampire symbols, including a dark-haired vampire, a blonde vampire, and a green-skinned vampire, among others.

The game features three special symbols: a Wild symbol that can substitute for any regular game symbol, a Scatter symbol that multiplies your wins and triggers a Free Spins round, and a Bonus symbol that triggers the Vampire Slaying Bonus Game. Each of these symbols offers a unique chance for players to increase their winnings.

With its detailed graphics, engaging bonus games, and high potential payouts, Blood Suckers remains one of NetEnt’s most popular games. It is available to play now at any NJ online casino.

logo da vinci diamonds igt 240x180

Da Vinci Diamonds

Experience the excitement of casino games with Da Vinci Diamonds, a captivating slot game developed by IGT that takes you on a journey through the beauty of Renaissance art. This medium volatility slot offers players a chance to increase their winning probability while experiencing the cascading reel system, with an RTP of 94.94% providing a slight house edge.

Featuring 5 reels and 20 fixed paylines, players can adjust their bet size per line, with a minimum bet of 0.01 and a maximum of 50 coins per spin. The game’s graphics are crisp and feature beautiful animations on the falling reels, adding to the excitement of the gameplay.

gonzo quest netent 240x180

Gonzo’s Quest

Unlike traditional slot games, the symbols in Gonzo’s Quest fall down on the screen in an avalanche-like manner, giving players the chance to score multiple combinations on a single spin. With 20 fixed paylines and a high volatility rate, the game offers exciting gameplay with the potential for higher wins.

Players can adjust their bet size according to their preferences, with the coin value ranging from 0.01 to 2.00, and the bet level up to 5, leading to a maximum bet of $200 per spin.

The game features nine stone-themed symbols, including a Wild and Scatter symbol. The Wild symbol substitutes for other game symbols to form a winning combination, while three Scatter symbols trigger the Free Fall round, providing players with 10 free falls with multiplier potential.

Gonzo’s Quest is a must-try for adventure-seeking players looking for a unique and thrilling online slot game. It is available on many casino sites, and players can enjoy the game from the comfort of their own home.

Table Games

If slots are a bit too simple for you or are just not your cup of tea, you can bet on one of many table games. There are usually several options of online blackjack in New Jersey, as well as roulette, baccarat, and other popular and less popular table games. The choice is usually not as big as with slots, but you’ll still have several dozen tables to choose from including vibrant online roulette in NJ casinos.

And if you’re confused, just start with some of the most popular titles like:

Live Dealer

Most of the table games we mentioned above can be played with live dealers in NJ live casinos. Such games are streamed live from special studios or even real offline casinos, letting you feel the vibe without actually leaving your house. In a live dealer game, you can watch the dealer, communicate with them or other players around the table, and, of course, win the money as you’d do in any Vegas venue. Unfortunately, not all the casinos in New Jersey have large collections of live dealer games yet, but there are already several popular titles made by Evolution Gaming, such as:

Online Poker

We can’t talk about casino games without mentioning online poker, especially since New Jersey joined a three-state agreement with Nevada and Delaware to share poker player pools. Among all the games on our list, poker is the only one that requires quite a lot of skill to win, which makes it even more exciting. Yes, you need to make some effort to learn the rules and combinations, but it will all pay out in the future. New Jersey online casinos offer a lot of online poker variations, including:

Lottery

The lottery is not the most popular gambling product in NJ online casinos, but there are some people who prefer lotteries to other games, mostly because they can be played fast and easily. These are usually scratch cards, draw games, wheels of luck, or keno games, but you can find some other options as well. If you’re looking for a nice online lottery, try checking one of the following titles:

Bingo

Bingo is a popular offline game that made its way to online casinos as well and now keeps its place in the ranks of the most frequently-played gambling products, alongside slots and roulette. It’s an easy game of chance where everything is done by a random number generator. Unlike offline bingo, you don’t even need to cross out numbers from your card, just sit back, relax, and wait for the wins to drop.

Some of the popular Bingo titles present in NJ online casinos include:

Slingo

Slingo combines the best of two gambling worlds, mixing bingo and video slots into one game. In Slingo, you’re required to spin the reels to reveal the winning numbers, as well as Wild symbols, multipliers, and other bonuses. It makes the process a bit more interactive than in a traditional Bingo game.

If this is something you’d like to try, look for these titles in NJ casinos:

Banking at NJ Online Casinos

Having a convenient deposit and withdrawal method is very important for many gamblers, and it can often be a decisive point when choosing an NJ online casino for real money bets. We can’t recommend you the best payment method as it mostly depends on your personal preferences, but we can share our list of websites that have a good choice of deposit and withdrawal options.

NB: remember that most casinos require you to use the same payment method both for a deposit and a withdrawal.

Play+

Playplus is a prepaid card that you can use both for casino deposits and other kinds of online payments. It’s a nice option for those who don’t want to share their credit card details online or those who are worried about spending more than they planned. The good part is that, unlike some other prepaid payment options, the Play+ card can be used for casino withdrawals as well, and you can even use it to withdraw money in the ATMs.

PayPal

No doubt, PayPal online casinos are what a lot of players are looking for, as it’s one of the most convenient payment methods for online betting purposes, online shopping, or just sending money to your friends or family. Not all NJ casinos accept PayPal, but the gamblers highly appreciate those that do. By the way, having PayPal as a payment method is another advantage of playing in legal online casinos — you will hardly find it anywhere except the websites licensed by the NJ DGE.

ACH/Bank Transfer

Bank transfer is not the first option that comes to mind when you think of making a casino deposit or withdrawal, however, ACH casinos exist, and lots of players do prefer this method to the more advanced one. Bank transfers are reliable and don’t require any additional accounts, but their important disadvantage is that they take much longer than other payment methods. With a bank transfer, you might wait for your casino deposit to be completed within several days, let alone the withdrawal, which can take up to a week.

PayNearMe

PayNearMe is an option for those who prefer cash payments but don’t want to drive all the way to Atlantic City casinos to make a “cash at casino cage” deposit. With PayNearMe, you can make a cash deposit at the nearest 7-Eleven, CVS, or Family Dollar Store. PayNearMe can’t be used for casino withdrawals, though, so make sure to pick some other method in advance.

Debit/Credit Cards

Probably the easiest way to make a casino deposit or withdrawal is to simply use your credit or debit card. It might sound like a not-so-secure option, but you can be sure that all the licensed NJ casinos use encryption and keep your personal and financial information safe. 100% of New Jersey online casinos accept credit cards, so there won’t be a problem finding a Visa or Mastercard casino.

Neteller

Making a deposit to a Neteller casino is easy as long as you have a Neteller account. This payment option works as an e-wallet. You top up your Neteller account first, then use it to transfer money to an NJ online casino. The same works for withdrawals: you withdraw money from a casino to your Neteller wallet and then transfer it to your bank card or any other payment method of your choice.

Cash at Casino Cage

Finally, if you live in Atlantic City or are a frequent visitor, you can always top up your online casino account directly in an offline casino. Just make sure that you visit the casino partnered with your chosen website — you can find our list above on this page. The payment won’t be processed immediately, but it can be a convenient option for those who prefer cash to cashless transactions.

Top 10 Tips for Beginners

If you’re just beginning to venture into the world of online gambling, here are some tips to keep in mind. Note that these tips won’t guarantee that you make any profit, but they will at least help minimize your risk and have great fun.

1

Pick the right casino site

Not all New Jersey online casinos are the same. They can differ in terms of game choice, bonuses, payment methods, mobile platform, and more. Explore every available option to find a site that best suits your playstyle.

2
Learn game rules

Playing a game for real money while not fully understanding the rules is a recipe for disaster. Luckily, most online casino games are simple, so you’ll catch on in no time.

3
Understand the odds

Casino games and various bets associated with each of them differ in terms of payout odds. Make sure to understand these odds before choosing how and where to place your wagers.

4
Look for rewarding bonuses

Every online casino in NJ has a pack of promotions that can help extend your bankroll. Some are more rewarding than others, but to truly figure out a value of a given bonus, you’ll have to check its terms and conditions.

5
Not every game is luck-based

While all casino games factor in luck, some also incorporate a certain level of skill. By learning various strategies for games like blackjack and online poker, you’ll be able to lower the house edge and extend your chance of making a profit.

6
Play progressives

If you really want to hit big, playing progressive jackpot games is your best shot. These games sometimes feature jackpots worth millions, but know that you won’t be very likely to win.

7
Control your bankroll

Never bet more than your wallet can handle. Establish a gambling budget and try not to go over it.

8
Don’t chase losses

Many beginner players often hit a losing streak and fall into the trap of thinking that they can win it all back by betting more. Stay cool, accept the losses as a normal part of gambling, and keep gambling within your budget.

9
Know when to stop

Gambling addiction is a real issue, and no one is safe from it. Try to limit your playing time to avoid becoming a compulsive gambler. Sometimes the best moment to stop is when you’re winning.

10
Stay legal

Online casinos are legal in New Jersey, and there are plenty of them to choose from, so don’t go rogue and risk breaking the law by playing on offshore sites.

Safety and Responsible Gambling

An essential aspect of online casinos is safety and responsible gambling. Our recommended casinos offer security measures like data encryption to protect your personal information and financial transactions. Additionally, we only collaborate with licensed and regulated casinos, ensuring fairness and reliability in the services offered.

Responsible gambling is at the core of our approach to gaming. We believe that players should enjoy gambling without putting themselves or their loved ones at risk of gambling-related problems. With this in mind, we recommend the following tips for responsible gambling:

  1. Set limits on bets, deposits, and time spent at the casino.
  2. Do not chase losses if you lose.
  3. Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
  4. Do not gamble under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
  5. Seek help if you feel gambling is starting to control your life.

If you are facing gambling-related problems or would like more information on how to gamble responsibly, visit the National Council on Problem Gambling or Gamblers Anonymous websites.
